BUILDING UPDATE

May 2, 2019

On Monday, April 21, the Move Team made a presentation to the Vestry regarding the progress of the new building, including the final cost which will require Immanuel to take out a mortgage. It was their recommendation to the Vestry that we should move forward with construction. The Vestry reviewed the draft contracts, the project scope and timeline, as well as the projections for our budget over four years and how we would service our mortgage. After discussion, the Vestry agreed that we should proceed with construction as soon as possible. Yesterday, May 1, the Move Team met with our Architect and General Contractor to discuss additional details regarding the building. We are making good progress on the many steps that need to fall into place to begin construction. Therefore, it looks like we should start clearing the land sometime in mid to late June!

As I mentioned, one of the realities of moving forward with construction is taking out a mortgage. There has been a lot of discussion about this among the Move Team, the Finance Committee, and the Vestry. This is not a decision that has been made lightly. As these groups have looked at our past patterns of giving as well as projections over the next few years, they decided that we could service a mortgage and continue our ministry growth within the scope of giving we have seen in recent non-campaign years. We will still need to give generously (which is Immanuel’s history, thankfully), but we are not planning on significant growth to pay for the building (which some churches do). Our financial plan is based on our current pattern of giving – around $500,000 to our ministry budget and $150,000 to the building fund. We must maintain this level of giving in the future. Yet, our leadership is not being unrealistic in thinking we could move forward in construction based on these current trends.

Last Sunday, I talked about this decision in the context of Numbers 13-14. If you would like to watch or listen to the sermon, you can visit Immanuel’s website to see a video or listen to the audio recording.

This is an exciting time in the life of our church! Please continue to pray as all of the last details come together. Also, continue to thank God that he has done this great work among us!

SEPTEMBER, 2018

Many of us remember the experience of moving into our first home. It was a place we could call our own. We could decorate and furnish it like we wanted. We could invite friends and family over and welcome them. It was a place to live, laugh, and share life with others. In many ways, that is the vision Immanuel has for our new church building on Hoadly Road. It will be a place we can call our own; a place built especially for us where we can worship, grow, and serve. Even better, it will be a home to which we can invite others to come and learn to follow Jesus Christ in every moment of their life and be equipped to fulfill the calling for which they were created by God.

One thing it won’t be, though, is a place for us to become settled! Our new building will be a missionary outpost from which we will be sent to serve Christ in our individual daily lives and as a church family. Every time we gather in our new home we will remember that Immanuel proclaims “God with us for the sake of others!”

On Sunday, September 16, the Move Team reported that our Site Plan is on schedule to be approved by the end of 2018. The Team also instructed our architect to begin construction documents, which should be completed in the first quarter of 2019. With these two phases of the project complete, and contingent upon meeting the Cornerstone Campaign goal, we will begin construction of our new church building around March, 2019. Our contractor estimates that construction will take around 9 months. Therefore, we could be moving into our new building in the first quarter of 2020!

Cornerstone Campaign Goal – $750,000

Remaining building costs projected at $3,600,000
(Our land was purchased with cash in 2015 and some of the fees associated with the project have already been paid.)

How we’ll get there

This chart outlines the type of gifts we will need to meet our campaign goal.
Gift amounts represent sacrifical giving from every part of our congregation.

The foundation of the Cornerstone Campaign will be a 50 day season of praise, prayer, fasting, and listening running September 16 – November 4, which is Commitment Sunday. We are asking God to do a miraculous work for us! Therefore, we must commit to persistent, bold, and specific prayer.

PRAISE – Praise God for his provision so far – for our land, for a successful BOLD Campaign, for friends outside of Immanuel who have contributed to our building, for an excellent architect, engineer, and contractor. Praise God for what he will do to provide all we need in the future to complete our building.

PRAY – Pray boldly and specifically, “Lord, please build our church next year!”

FAST – Fast from food, electronics, shopping, or other activities for a period of time over the 50 days (perhaps one day, once a week, or however you feel led) in order to bring your full attention to prayer.

LISTEN – Listen to whaat God has to say to you and to Immanuel as we move forward in faith. Listen specifically to how God will invite you to join him in his work of building our new building.

The Listening Tour is a series of small gatherings in homes to hear from Fr. Clint and one another about our dreams and hopes for Immanuel as we move to our new building. Gatherings will be in October and November, with childcare available at two of the homes. (All gatherings have the same format whether or not childcare is available.) Sign up on Sundays before and after the service or by emailing the church office at office@iachurch.org.
