Rector’s Blog: Summer of Mission

1967 was the Summer of Love. Bryan Adams sang about the Summer of ’69. I remember reading the Summer of the Monkeys while I was in school. It’s interesting how we look back on the summer season as so momentous, we need to label it! I decided rather than buck the trend, Immanuel should embrace it. So, I am happy to present to you the Summer of Mission at Immanuel. This summer, Immanuel will focus our outreach to our community in two primary ways.

The first is Vacation Bible School, July 29-August 2. Our VBS has grown tremendously the past couple of years under Melissa Byers’ leadership. The most exciting part of this growth has been that most of the children who attend are not directly connected to our church. It is a program of outreach and an opportunity to share Jesus with kids who do not regularly attend Immanuel! Another addition last year was the lunch program where the parents of participants could join their children and the VBS volunteers for a quick lunch each day. It was a great way to get to know these families and share God’s love with them in an informal way.

Our second outreach opportunity is the King Elementary School “Rock the Block” party on August 8. Like last year, we will be providing backpacks of school supplies as well as clothes to students and families of King Elementary, which is one of the schools that benefits from our Backpacks for Kids program. This year, we’re going to go all out by having ProTown BMX come back to do their show at King! It is both a fun show to watch and an opportunity for the King community to hear a message about the saving love of Jesus Christ.

But don’t limit the Summer of Mission to these two events. God has you on mission right where you’re at – whether it’s a work, the pool, or on vacation. Wherever you are, God’s mission is right there! Be on the lookout for opportunities to share the love of Jesus with those around you!
